Spend a Day in the Vernon Hills Park District

hanging out in the park

In 1973, Dolores Sullivan’s dream of establishing the Vernon Hills Park District became a reality.

Today, it boasts over 400 acres of parkland and waters throughout the village.

The Park District strives to meet the leisure needs and physical demands of our growing community, and highlights include:

Adult Softball League

Numerous adult sports leagues are offered throughout the year, including softball. Teams can take to the field during both the summer and fall months, and they play a regular ten game season. The top four advance to a post-season tournament and league champions receive a cash prize.

Century Park Arboretum

At 113 acres, the Century Park Arboretum is the district’s largest park. It offers a scenic place to play bocce ball, volleyball, and horseshoes. Visitors can also enjoy a relaxing afternoon of fishing, or enjoy a delicious meal at one of the picnic gazebos.

Hawthorn Mellody Park

At one time, the Hawthorn Mellody Farms Dairy called this land home. That’s how the park got its name, and it comes complete with ball fields, a sand volleyball court, and a basketball half-court. There’s also a lighted .5 mile walking path through a partially wooded area.

Adult Water Walking

Held at the Family Aquatic Center, adult water walking is a fun way to burn calories while meeting new friends. Sessions are held daily through August 4th, and the cost for residents is $5.50.

Farmers Market

Shop for fresh produce and more at the Park District’s new farmers market. It runs from June 6th through August 29th at the south end of Century Park. Participating vendors include Green Spot Farm, Mavra’s Greek Oil, and Elsie Mae’s Canning & pies.
