Are you looking to enjoy a bike ride that’s challenging, yet fun?
Then pedal along a nearby mountain bike trail where you’ll also find stunning scenery. Highlights include:
Chipilly Woods Mountain Bike Trail
Spanning seven miles, Chipilly Woods begins with a downhill that you wouldn’t expect on a Chicagoland trail. Downed tree limbs and stream crossings also challenge riders of all abilities. The singletrack becomes very tight near the river, and a few side paths can be explored.
North Branch Trail
What was once a dirt path used by horseback riders is now paved for mountain biking and other activities. The North Branch Trail stretches over 20 miles through Cook County. It runs along golf courses, Erickson Woods, and Skokie Lagoons. At the northern end of the trail, riders find the Chicago Botanic Garden. The garden is a scenic destination featuring over two dozens gardens on 385 acres.
Green Bay Trail
Running through cities such as Winnetka and Lake Bluff, Green Bay is a nine-mile trail surrounded by restaurants and community parks. It’s for all skill levels and stretches along the former Chicago, North Shore & Milwaukee interurban electric railroad. The path is within a mile of Lake Michigan, and riders can take a side trip to enjoy beachfront views.
Robert McClory Bike Path
Once the Green Bay Trail reaches Saint Johns Avenue and Sheridan Road, it turns into the Robert McClory Bike Path. This 25.4-mile trail runs the length of Lake County. It’s named after a former Republican congressman and passes a few parks and forest preserves. Robert McClory also skirts old Fort Sheridan, a decommissioned Army garrison turned into a fashionable neighborhood.
